About Us
At Washington Elementary, our mission is to create a dynamic and supportive learning environment where our students can explore their interests. Through our unique exploration clubs, student recognition and other learning events, our hope is for students to grow academically, socially and emotionally.
Testimonials
Hear from our students
From the supportive staff and collaborative environment to the educational opportunities here at Washington, they reflect on the many reasons they love coming to school every day.
Special Opportunities
Exploration Clubs
Washington stands out by offering students the opportunity to participate in clubs every Monday during their special area time. Each student selects a club based on their interests and remains part of that club for six weeks. At the start of each quarter, they can choose a new club to join. Club options include needlepoint, fishing, ooey gooey science, STEAM, board games, animation, make your own book, friendship bracelets, cooking and more. The students absolutely LOVE these clubs! As students continue at Washington, they gain exposure to a variety of lifetime skills and hobbies. The principal, teachers, case managers, licensed therapist, administrative assistant and other staff all volunteer their time to lead and facilitate these clubs.
Monthly Student Celebrations
Each month, Washington highlights a special character quality. Students are introduced to the monthly character quality during a family meeting at the beginning of the month. Teachers and staff watch for students who demonstrate this quality throughout the month. At the end of the month, one student in each grade level is chosen. Families of the chosen students are invited to a special celebration assembly and stay afterward to share a special treat with their student of the month. This recognition encourages students to consistently model positive behavior and celebrate their achievements.
Social Emotional Learning (SEL) in PreK - 1st Grade
Students in pre-K, kindergarten and 1st grade take part in special social emotional learning lessons given by the principal, case manager, administrative assistant, licensed therapist and interventionist. These lessons take place once a week in the classroom. In these lessons, students learn how to communicate with one another, identify their emotions and how others are feeling, learn how to respond appropriately to their emotions or the emotions of others, respect each other, listen, speak up for themselves, work as a group, make friends, play well together, take turns, etc. The things they have learned through these lessons are continuously reinforced as they continue in grades 2-5 at Washington.
Branson the Library Pup
Every Monday during club hour, Branson the Poodle makes his way to the library where he’s become a beloved part of the school community. His weekly visits have become a tradition.
Calming Center
This is an area where children are guided through mental and physical tasks that help them calm down and cooperate. It seeks to help them get regulated when they are feeling dysregulated. When students are having big emotions and feeling physically impulsive it can help them come back to a mindful state where they are ready to engage and learn.
