Our History

Washington Elementary School is named for President George Washington. The school was built in 1929, the second building named for the first president. The first was built in 1868. The school’s history follows the history of the city, and it was the site of a unique partnership in the 1990s. From 1993-1999, Washington and Study elementary schools were considered one school with two campuses. Pre-k through second grades were housed at Washington with third through fifth grades at Study.

Today, Washington Elementary has relationships with several community organizations. A partnership with the Fort Wayne Downtown Rotary Club called Stepping Stones seeks to transform lives one step at a time. Rotary members volunteer at the school through Study Connection, Big Brothers/Big Sisters Lunch Buddy program and in many other ways.

Washington is a Title I school and offers extended learning teacher tutor time after school. It also offers the English Language Learners (ELL) program. Students from Washington feed into Portage Middle School and Wayne High School. The school is located in the Board of School Trustees District 4.
